The Anchor Inn is situated in the very heart of Cowes town centre and its bustling yachting scene. Opposite Cowes Yacht Haven and just a short stroll from the RedJet ferry terminal, it is the ideal place to relax after a hard day on the waves. The Anchor offers good food, fine ales and a warm welcome throughout the year.
A public house has stood on the site for over 300 years, refreshing passers-by and offering its hospitality to Island visitors. In 1704, the Debourne Estate leased some land called St Mary’s Mead, on which the Anchor now stands, for 99 years to a certain Ladowyke Brandenburg, a victualler. It was originally called the ‘House of the Three Trumpeters’ and soon became the principle coaching inn of Cowes. Some time during the 1820s, its name changed to ‘The Anchor Inn’, by which it has been known ever since – or colloquially, just as ‘The Anchor’. Certainly, its nautical reference seems fitting for a pub so near the sea, where sailors from vessels of all shapes and sizes may sink their anchor for a short while and enjoy some time out on land.
