The Digital Phoenix Society (part of F.I.T Ltd) is a Not-for-profit Organisation that aims to promote Digital Inclusiveness by helping those with mental health and disabilities with getting online and using technology.

For the past 7+ years I have been volunteering as both a Digital Champion and I.T Tutor at various organizations and in those 7+ years I have encountered many people with disabilities and mental health problems that wanted support with using the computers and the internet.

Now as you can imagine, if you are new to computing, just learning how to use the keyboard and mouse itself is difficult, but if you have a health problem on top of that, then the learning curve will be even more steep (both physically and mentally) and unfortunately many groups and organisations do not have the tools, funding or patience required to offer them support.

That’s why I created The Digital Phoenix Society because as technology progresses, so must we as a society and whilst everything slowly becomes online only (i.e. Job Searching, Council Forms, Video Games, etc...) we must improve digital inclusiveness for everyone to make sure that nobody feels like they are left behind.

Our Aims:

1) Create a weekly ‘Digital Phoenix Drop-in’ for those with health problems that would prevent them from participating on a long-weekly computer course/group and those who simply require one off help, in order for them to still get the computer based support that they need, in a calm and relaxed enviroment suitable for everyone.

2) Create various one-off courses and groups locally to raise awareness and promote digital inclusiveness, aswell as fun one-off computer activity groups for those with health problems, to help with stress relief and confidence building.

3) Eventually train-up our own ‘Digital Phoenix Volunteers’, that will be specialized Digital Champions with the skills needed to better support those with mental health and disabilities, to volunteer and assist with the computers in various local groups, courses and charity organisations in and around the Salford and Manchester area.
